The Remembrance Service at St Paul’s was well attended and a fitting tribute to both the fallen of the two World Wars and to all those men and women who have served and sacrificed in the defence of liberty and democracy.
Rev David Coulter gave a moving sermon that took us back to the withdrawal of British troops from Afghanistan, without the peaceful resolution that motivated their deployment. It was a solemn reminder that we must always strive to achieve peace, while recognising the sacrifices that a quest for freedom and justice might require.
Stirring hymns lifted spirits, while the Last Post, Reveille and Pipers’ Lament touched the heart, connecting us through these poignant melodies with those soldiers who heard those same notes flowing through the darkness of the trenches.
We shall remember them.
