I have had the privilege of knowing Fr Hugh Bearn for almost 30 years through various roles at St Anne’s Church in Tottington, most recently as Churchwarden. Throughout this time, and in all capacities, he has been a steadfast source of pastoral care and personal support.
In addition to my role within the church, I have served as the leader of Tottington St Anne’s Guides for over 30 years. Fr Hugh has consistently demonstrated unwavering support for the youth of St Anne’s, championing all our uniformed organisations, altar servers, choir members (scholars), Sunday School participants, and indeed, all young people associated with the parish.
Recognising my background in Guiding, Fr Hugh approached me with the idea of travelling to Monaco to connect with the local guiding and scouting community, with a view to building links between them and St Anne’s. It was through his initiative that I was introduced to Jean Keraudren and I was delighted to attend a fundraising dinner in May where I met Jean and his fellow leaders. We have since agreed to begin collaborative efforts with the 10–13 age group, and I am now working with our scout leaders to determine the most effective way forward.
This initiative is a testament to Fr Hugh’s enduring commitment to fostering meaningful relationships and creating enriching opportunities for young people. His passion for youth engagement and international connection continues to have a lasting and positive impact.
