I was very fortunate to be confirmed recently during the Bishop of Gibraltar’s visit to our region. It was a deeply moving milestone, shared with fellow members of our congregation, but the journey to that moment began long ago.
For most of my life, the Church has been a constant backdrop. From my own baptism and Sunday School to the “big moments”—marriage, the baptism of our daughter, family weddings and funerals—the Church was always there. Yet, as life became a whirlwind of a growing family and a demanding professional career, I allowed “work” to become my default. I was aware of a space in my heart, but I allowed my schedule to be a reason not to explore it. Eventually, I realized that simply being busy was not fulfilling my spiritual needs.
The turning point came last year during a long-awaited pilgrimage. Away from the digital noise of mobile phones and emails, I found that walking was truly therapeutic; it cleared my mind and opened my heart. I returned home knowing I needed to bring faith back to the center of my life.
My path led me through the doors of St Paul’s, where I found an immediate sense of calm amidst the bustle of Monaco. A warm welcome from Father Hugh grew into discussions about re-engaging with my Christian upbringing. I realised that now was the right time to take ownership of the promises made on my behalf as a child.
After a period of preparation with Father Hugh, the date was set for Sunday, 30th November—the First Sunday of Advent—at Holy Trinity Church, Nice. Prior to the ceremony, we met with Bishop Robert, Archdeacon Peter, and Father Jeremy, who welcomed us into the vicarage and immediately put us at ease with their warmth.
The ceremony itself was a beautiful culmination of our personal journeys. Between the joyful energy of the congregation and the vibrant light streaming through the spectacular stained-glass windows, it was an atmosphere I will never forget. It was a very moving experience, and one that has left an indelible mark on my soul.
