Just over a year ago, a plaque in memory of Sir Winston Churchill was dedicated at St Paul’s Church to mark what would have been the wartime Prime Minister’s 150th birthday. This was done in the presence of his grandson Randolph Churchill and Randolph’s daughter who were also present for the rededication of the Churchill bust which is found in Churchill Square, on Avenue de Grande Bretagne.

St Paul’s was built in 1925 to serve as a place for the British community to worship in the Principality. Constructed on what was originally called Avenue des Fleurs, St Paul’s has been central to British representation in the area so it is little wonder that the street was considered a fitting location for a Churchill bust in 1969.

Recently, the Parish Administrator has found footage in the British Pathé archives taken at the unveiling of the Churchill bust in 1969. This was done in the presence of Mary Soames, daughter of Sir Winston. The footage can be seen in the short news reel below (skip to 2:17 for the unveiling of the bust).

In addition, more footage from the same tape can be found directly on British Pathé’s website by clicking on the links below.

If you can think of any other archives that might have historic footage that is relevant to St Paul’s, please do get in touch with the Chaplain.
