As Britain stood alone in the dark days of World War Two General Charles De Gaulle made an impassioned speech that was seen as a rallying call to resist Nazi tyranny by the Free French everywhere. This Appeal, as it was referred to, was only made possible with the support of Winston Churchill via the British Broadcasting Corporation in London and was made on the 18th of June 1940.
To mark this historic occasion and for the second year, a gathering will take place on Thursday the 18th June 2026 at 12.00 noon at the site of the Churchill bust at Square Winston Churchill, on the avenue de Grand Bretagne. Once all of the invited dignitaries have arrived, His Excellency the French Ambassador, Jean D’Haussonville will read the Appel du 18-Juin.
Wreathes will then be laid at the foot of the bust followed by the National Anthems of the Principality, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Republic of France. The ceremony will last approximately 20 minutes to which everyone is warmly invited. Please contact the Chaplain, Fr Hugh for any further information.
