There are many ways of indicating the use of single letters in a crossword and you’ll find quite a few in this puzzle. As we’ve seen previously, some common words are accepted as standing for just their first letters, such as “new, old, husband, energy, island”. Then, of course, you can have “initially, starting, entrance of” etc which often refer to the first letters of the word or words which follow.
Sometimes the definition can be presented as a different part of speech, e.g. 27 Across. In this clue the definition is “detail” and reads as a noun, but in the answer it represents a verb. Always be on the lookout for little tricks like that.
