Music decidedly reaches the parts that words cannot reach – to misquote an oft-heard phrase from the 1970’s referring to a slightly fizzy alcoholic beverage. Nevertheless, there is more than an element of truth in the notion, as we do our best to offer a worthy gesture of thanksgiving through music in church – primarily to God of course, but also in recognition to our sponsors.

We are therefore profoundly grateful for the generosity of those kind people who have enabled the role of music in St. Paul’s worship to blossom and grow. Last Sunday, we were happy to celebrate the Patronal Feast-day of St. Paul with a Mass by Schubert – one of his five settings for choir, soloists, and orchestra – a typically Schubertian composition, glowing as it does with inspired tunes and harmonic invention.

The next occasion using similar forces will be the third anniversary of the King’s Accession at Choral Evensong on Monday 8 September.
