We were delighted to welcome Canon Huw Thomas at St Paul’s on Mothering Sunday.

The subject of Huw’s sermon was “Mother Church” and he related this both to the blesséd Virgin and his time in overseas work for the Anglican Communion in Ethiopia, Pakistan, Egypt and Algeria.

He described how Churches that had begun in embryonic form are now producing their own Bishops but also reminded us that many Christians exist in dreadful circumstances of suffering and persecution. This is a far cry from the religious freedoms that we take for granted.

A wise and holy man, with a cultured sense of humour, Huw’s soft Welsh accent conveyed both sincerity and conviction. It was a joy to have him among us and when Huw joined us for coffee, he was delighted to discover a parishioner whose own father was born in the same remote Welsh village as his own.
